Osteopathy
More than a hundred years ago an osteopath realised that there is subtle motion between the twenty-two skull bones and that this has a profound influence on the whole body because everything in the body is connected to everything else. Nothing in the body happens in isolation, because everything is connected to and therefore affected by everything else. We know this from anatomy(structure) and physiology, two of the subjects osteopaths study in great detail.
Osteopathy is a way of detecting and treating damaged parts of the body such as muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints. When the body is balanced and efficient, just like a well tuned engine, it will function with the minimum of wear and tear, leaving more energy for living.
If the body’s structure is out of balance due to poor body use, tension, injury, etc we eventually experience symptoms such as pain and stiffness. Osteopaths work to release structural tension and help the body to rebalance so that it functions more efficiently and more comfortably. This applies to all bodies, whatever their age.
Cranial osteopaths are well known for their work in helping babies and children. Babies are commonly brought to see us because they don’t sleep well, they may scream incessantly, they may want to be held or feed all the time, they may be colicky, constipated or vomiting excessively …. Very often on examination we find excessive tension in their body which is causing sufficient pain or discomfort to make them cry, not sleep etc. When we help the body to release the tension the baby becomes more comfortable, is able to relax and therefore functions much better.
Babies & Children: Persistent crying, feeding difficulties, sickness, colic, sleep disturbances. Some behavioural problems, learning difficulties
Pregnancy: prepare for pregnancy by having your back & pelvic alignment improved. This can make pregnancy more comfortable and labour more straightforward.
Osteopaths treat a variety of common conditions including changes to posture in pregnancy; babies with colic or sleeplessness, repetitive strain injury, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis and sports injuries.
Some of the problems Osteopaths treat:-
- Headaches
- Whiplash
- Frozen or stiff shoulders
- Sports injuries such as ‘tennis’ elbow
- Sciatica
- Facial and sinus pain
- Low back pain
- Pain and stiffness associated with arthritis
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Hip, thigh and knee problems
- Back pain during and after pregnancy
- Wrist and hand pain
- Childhood problems.
With their hands osteopaths identify abnormalities within the human structure and function. They then facilitate the body's ability to heal itself through a variety of stretching, mobilizing and manipulative techniques. With added exercises and health advice, osteopaths help to reduce the symptoms and improve your health and quality of life.
The ‘Cranial Osteopath’ is a fully qualified osteopath who has also studied the very gentle ‘cranial’ techniques. The techniques are so gentle they can be used on anyone from newborn to the elderly.
